Breaking the Silence: Faith, Hope and the Stigma Around Mental Health

Breaking the Silence: Faith, Hope and the Stigma Around Mental Health

Let’s talk about something that too often stays tucked away in the corners of our hearts—mental health. Did you know that May is mental health awareness month?

For many of us, it feels easier to say “I’m fine” than to admit when we’re not. Especially in faith-based circles, there can be this quiet pressure to always be joyful, to always be strong. But here’s the truth: struggling with your mental health doesn’t mean you’re lacking faith or you’re “weak”. It means you’re human.

I’m not a bible scholar by any means…I’m just a sinner saved by grace at the age of 37. I’m still learning! I like to say that I’m “under construction” and I will be until that beautiful day I meet Jesus face to face! You know, God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called. It says so in Exodus 3:11-12. We don’t have to know it all to share the hope and faith in God’s word. He’ll equip us - if we let Him.

It is a daily walk though, sometimes it’s just a little prayer and whisper to myself to just get through TODAY. I have faith that TODAY is going to be a GOOD day. As hard as some days are, sometimes I must intentionally look for blessings and focus on those. Focus on what IS good because there’s ALWAYS something to be thankful for!

I was doing some research and found that some of the most faithful people in the Bible cried out in pain, wrestled with deep sorrow, and questioned their strength. David poured his heart out in the Psalms. Elijah sat under a tree and begged God to let him go. And still, God loved them. Still, He used them powerfully.

At Little Block of Happy, I want to help change the conversation. I want to build a community where we don’t hide behind masks but instead hold each other up with love and compassion. Where we can say, “I’m struggling,” and hear, “You’re not alone.” Where we share our stories, speak hope over each other, and take care of our minds the same way we take care of our hearts.

I know we can’t change the world but it does START with us! It starts with me…here…in this space. One heart at a time. One day at a time. So YES! Yes we can change the world!

Encouragement though isn’t just a cute quote—it’s a lifeline. So let’s start here. Let’s speak life into those who are hurting. Let’s remind them they’re seen, they’re loved, they’re valued, and they’re never alone. Let’s be the light in someone’s darkest day. You never know the impact you’ll make on someone’s day just by sending that quick text letting them know you’re thinking of them. Or that coffee date just to reminisce and share a hug. Even a simple smile while walking along the street. You never know what people are struggling with in this ever “happy” world of social media. Where people only show their wins and perfect lives. That’s a façade. Life is hard but there is hope if you have faith in Jesus!

If you’re the one struggling today, I want you to know: you are not broken. You are deeply loved. There is no shame in your story—only strength.

Together, we can build a community that stands on faith, walks in love, and fights the stigma—one heart at a time.

You are loved my friend, no matter your circumstance.
