The Beautiful Truth: Joy Is a Choice We Get to Make
Hey sweet friends!
Have you ever had one of those days when everything seems upside down? The kids are grumpy, the coffee spills, you’ve had a bad day at work, your to-do list grows by the minute and suddenly, joy feels like it’s a million miles away. I know I have, especially in this season of middle school coming to an end and summer break about to start! I’m sure you know exactly where I’m coming from!
This season can be very overwhelming. I get it! But here’s a powerful truth I’ve learned: joy isn’t something that happens to us; it’s something we CHOOSE.
I know that might sound a little cliche at first. Life throws us curveballs, and some seasons feel impossibly heavy. But God’s Word gently reminds us, “The joy of the Lord is our strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). That verse doesn’t say the joy of perfect circumstances or the joy of everything going our way - it says the joy of the Lord is our strength. That kind of joy is steady, deep, and available even on our hardest days. What a great reminder!
Joy, however, isn’t just pretending that everything’s fine. It’s not ignoring pain or bypassing the hard stuff. Joy is the brave, faith-filled decision to say, “God, even in this… I will praise You.” It’s the shift in our hearts when we thank Him for small blessings, trust Him with big worries, and remember that He is still good.
Choosing joy might look like blasting worship music…like it is for me when life gets hard. It may be speaking kind words when you feel frustrated or pausing to breathe and pray instead of spiraling into stress. How easy is that to do right? These choices may feel small, but they carry weight. They remind our hearts who’s really in control.
